  • Renewable and clean energy (solar, wind, clean hydrogen, etc..)
  • Clean and sustainable mobility

The project will help to make Salzgitter stronger as a centre of industry and innovation over the long term. The transition to low-carbon production processes within companies is a model for many other industrial areas that are facing similar challenges.

In addition to the construction of industrial facilities, demonstration-scale units will also be built directly on campus and turned into a walk-through model of the Salzgitter hydrogen region. The sector coupling will also be mapped as a digital twin, making it possible to analyse and test interactions in simulations before constructing the demonstrators. Alongside the scientific knowledge gained from applied research projects, this infrastructure will be used in particular for vocational education and training, and for community education and information.

The key elements of the project are:

  • modelling of the hydrogen-based value chain in order to map and analyse technical relationships and economic/ecological dependencies
  • development of substantial electrolysis capacity for sector coupling, and direct use of green hydrogen and its by-products/conversion products in local industry and transport
  • a hydrogen information and training centre to train staff and inform the public
  • the Hydrogen Campus as a service provider, idea generator and supporter of joint hydrogen projects by the participating entities and external partners
  • support for the establishment of hydrogen-related start-ups
  • continuity and efficiency in development, testing and scaling along the value chain, supported by subsidies
