The focus is on conserving the populations of the endangered bird species that can be found in the Weidmoos. Targeted management interventions have made it possible to preserve the Weidmoos as a breeding, resting and wintering site for bird species that are now endangered throughout Europe.
Many of the bird species living in the Weidmoos depend
on an open landscape with areas of wetland and standing water. Targeted action
needed to be taken in order to conserve these landscape features in the
Weidmoos for the future, or in some cases to re-create them.
Some areas of land and rights of use needed to be
acquired before the planned biotope management measures could be implemented.
Detailed plans for the construction work were drawn up
on the basis of the existing management plan.
The closure of drainage ditches and construction of
dams helped to prevent the area drying out and turning into woodland.
Baseline surveys and monitoring programmes have been
used to provide an ongoing basis for decision-making and to document the
success of the management measures.
Facilities for visitors mean that everyone can experience the Weidmoos without disturbing its delicate balance.
