The vital role of research and innovation (R&I) in driving European competitiveness and enhancing citizens' well-being was the focus of a workshop titled "Shaping the EU’s Competitive Future with Research & Innovation – Enabling Communities to Live Better" held on 8 October as part of the European Week of Regions and Cities (EWRC).
The discussion emphasised how EU's enlargement in 2004 boosted investment in R&I and enhanced reforms. Horizon Europe and cohesion funds have played key roles, with significant allocations. Exploiting available R&I funding is crucial for regional prosperity.
Organized under the Knowledge Exchange Platform (KEP 2.0) project, the workshop showcased local successes achieved through EU funding, evaluated past framework programmes, and explored opportunities for improvement and synergies. The session provided concrete insights from 20 years since EU enlargement and the 40 years since the first framework programme.
Participants engaged speakers with key questions, such as: How have European programmes (cohesion funds and framework programmes) so far contributed to bridging the innovation gap? What are the main expectations and key recommendations of local authorities for the next framework programme?
The panel was attended by: CoR member Kata Tüttő, deputy mayor of Budapest, vice-chair of the ENVE Commission and of the PES Group; David Uhl íř, representative of the South Moravian Innovation Agency; and Francesca Doria, a deputy head of unit at DG R&I. The moderator was Magda de Carli, a deputy director at DG R&I.
Kata Tutto (HU/PES), CoR member and deputy mayor of Budapest: "When talking about innovation, we should also think of the social field and democracy. Although people engage less and less in politics, trust in local government remains. Hence, we should encourage citizens, mostly the young, to participate in politics".
