From protecting bees to restoring an abandoned building, transforming it into a library and socio-cultural space, Capizzone has demonstrated the importance of exchanging information on good environmental practices.
Capizzone and the House of Bees – Let's learn to see bees in a different light.
The Municipality of Capizzone, as the pilot municipality for the "BeeAware!" project, has rolled out a series of initiatives to protect and support "solitary bees". These bees are pollinating insects with an even greater potential for pollination than common honeybees (Apis mellifera).
A collaborative effort between the municipality and the Beekeepers Association has resulted in the creation of a "Bee hotel". This is an artificial construction made exclusively from natural materials (mainly wood). It provides these essential and tireless pollinating insects with shelter and a nesting place.
The other initiative put in place by the Municipality of Capizzone is the "Festival of the Bees". This event, which takes place at the end of summer, aims to raise the local population's awareness of the need to protect bees as essential pollinators, as well as of the bio-indicators which convey the environmental situation in the area that they live.
Transforming a former school building that had been disused for many years into a new library and cultural space: the building is energy self-sufficient and provides extra energy for recharging an electric car which can be used by the municipality.
New measures were taken along the main course of the Imanga River, using biocompatible solutions such as reinforced soil, while completely excluding artificial elements.
All of the public network's lighting fixtures were replaced with new generation LED lighting, thus reducing energy consumption by 70% compared to the past.
