This project is important because of the risks associated with inadequate waste water management, which endangers biodiversity. The lack of green and modern solutions poses a threat to the region’s future development.

For economic reasons, local people have been unable to finance waste water treatment solutions. In light of this, the possibility of supporting this kind of investment under the 2014-2020 Podkarpackie Regional Operational Programme was negotiated with the European Commission. And as a result, a call for was launched for projects to build domestic waste water treatment plants in areas of high nature value, limited to Natura 2000 sites, under Investment Priority 6d.

Following the approval of the project selection criteria by the Monitoring Committee, in May 2019 the Podkarpackie Regional Government announced a call for proposals, setting an exceptionally long period of 4 months to prepare and submit applications.

As a result of the competition, eligible applicants submitted 5 funding applications for a total of some PLN 11 million (all projects received funding).

The competition has made it possible to gain practical experience with implemented projects, which will be an important asset when considering similar support for the next financial perspective. On the basis of the competition, best practices for grants will be developed for areas with low-density housing that are facing domestic waste water problems, particularly in areas of high nature value. Following the current pilot scheme in Bieszczady and Błękitny San, the initiative is expected to be extended to all areas of high nature value, including Natura 2000, throughout the region.
