In the South PACA Region, which is highly touristic, it is essential to monitor water bodies and raise public awareness during periods of high influx, in order to protect these vulnerable areas.

The "Regional Marine Guard" is a team of seasonal staff deployed in the marine protected areas of the region during the summer period. These officers are responsible for monitoring water bodies, monitoring site attendance and raising public awareness, with the aim of preserving natural spaces. Adopted in December 2023 by the Regional Council, this scheme is intended for managers of marine protected areas in the region, regardless of their status (national, regional parks, Natura 2000 areas, etc.). The hiring period can cover all or part of the summer, with a limit of eight months. Recruitment of seasonal staff is carried out by the employing management structures.

In early summer 2023, the Region, in partnership with the French Biodiversity Office, organised a one-day training course for all recruited staff. That same year, 26 guards were hired on behalf of 13 structures managing marine protected areas. The feedback confirmed the interest of the system and its relevance to the needs and issues expressed by the managers of marine protected areas as well as by the Region. Summer 2024 is expected to see an increase in the number of beneficiary structures and staff recruited, with around 15 structures expected.
