The first session of the seminar will explore how a territorial focus and place-based solutions can successfully support companies, ensuring that the EU steel sector remains vital and innovative. The EU steel sector plays a vital role in the European economy and serves as a key foundation for prosperity, value creation, investment and employment across many European regions. When providing support to the European steel industry, it is essential to consider the territorial dimensions, including the capacity of regional industrial ecosystems, to ensure the effective implementation of support measures.

The second session will investigate how the EU, Member States and European regions can promote the innovative, green and competitive domestic EU steel industry that is essential to meet Europe’s Green Deal ambitions, to ensure Europe’s economic resilience as well as the EU’s aims for an open strategic autonomy and defence. This is a critical time for the steel sector as is it is facing challenges such as high energy costs, high-regulatory burden requirements, unfair global competition due to unjustified tariffs, distortion of state subsidies and the need for green investment to decarbonise and meet the EU climate targets.
