The EU Nature Restoration Regulation aims to gradually restore damaged ecosystems within the European Union. It forms part of the European Green Deal and is designed to halt the loss of biodiversity, increase resilience to climate change and enhance the benefits that nature provides to people.
Among other things, the Regulation obliges Member States to maintain and, in the long term, expand the condition of urban green spaces. Overall, the Regulation shifts the focus from merely protecting existing nature to actively restoring damaged ecosystems. For European cities, this means that green and natural spaces should in future be regarded as essential components of sustainable urban development and should be maintained and expanded accordingly.
Policy-makers and staff from the city administrations of Luxembourg, Metz, Saarbrücken and Trier are coming together to discuss the challenges posed by the implementation of the EU Nature Regulation and to identify concrete solutions. There will be a round-table discussion involving the mayors, as well as presentations by experts.
