Opinion on Challenges and opportunities of Artificial Intelligence in the public sector: defining the role of regional and local authorities

The CoR has recently appointed Alberto Cirio (EPP/IT), President of the Piedmont region, as rapporteur for the opinion on Challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence in the public sector: defining the role of regional and local authorities

The rapporteur will draft his opinion by the end of September 2024 and it is scheduled for adoption at the CoR ECON Commission meeting on 24 October 2024 in Tampere.

Before drafting, the rapporteur would like to gather your views and feedback on the questions below:

  1. What role should local and regional authorities play in establishing and implementing the new rules on AI and in the context of the twin green and digital transitions? 
  2. How can the widespread use of AI-related technology improve and accelerate the internal processes of public administrations? Can you name its main benefits?
  3. How should access to and management and sharing of data in public administrations be made simpler, more secure and more efficient? What are the main obstacles facing the public sector? 
  4. What role can regions, provinces and municipalities play in ensuring education and training for civil servants to enable them to harness the benefits of AI, including through better use of EU funds? 
  5. How can local and regional authorities actively involve citizens and local communities in the decision-making process on the implementation of the AI strategy, while ensuring transparency, accountability and adaptability to the specific needs of the local context?
  6. Which multi-stakeholder partnerships and collaborations can be developed by local and regional authorities to maximise the impact and sustainability of the implementation of the AI strategy?
