Alberto Cirio elected President of the Economic Affairs Committee of the European Committee of the Regions

The President of the Piedmont Region, unanimously elected, will lead the work on artificial intelligence and the future of European industry for the next two and a half years: “The experience of local administrators is crucial for translating European policies into concrete and useful actions for citizens and industries”.

Artificial intelligence, the digital transition of Europe's regions, but also the European Union's industrial and investment policy are the themes of the Commission for Economic Policy (ECON)of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), which represents the voice of the regions and cities of the 27 Member States of the European Union.

Two days after being reconfirmed as head of the Italian CoR delegation, Alberto Cirio was elected Chair of the ECON commission during the inaugural meeting of the new mandate 2025-2030. Cirio will chair the committee for the next two and a half years. A new election will take place in 2027 to choose the Chair who will lead ECON in the second part of the mandate.

"I am grateful to the family of the European People's Party for being a candidate for the presidency of the ECON commission, and honoured by the trust that local and regional administrators from all over Europe who elected me have placed in me", commented Alberto Cirio. "I will make available my experience as a Member of the European Parliament, but in particular that as a public administrator - he added - The work of the ECON commission is fundamental in light of the new sensitivity that is emerging in the European Commission, made of pragmatism and common sense. The work done in Brussels is crucial for translating European policies into concrete acts, adapted to the specificities of individual regions. But this can only be done by public administrators, who interpret real life, close to the problems of citizens and companies. The priorities of the work I will carry out are artificial intelligence and its applications in the economic and industrial fields, but also in European industry, and in particular in the car industry. That is to say, everything that revolves around the economic heart of our Europe.”
