Events of a social, academic, artistic or sporting nature provide an excellent framework for setting an example to society on the need for solutions that guarantee the smallest impact from an environmental, social and economic point of view.
The carbon footprint of events is an indicator that allows us to know the environmental impact of the different stages of an event, in particular its impact on climate change. Based on this indicator, organisers and businesses involved in an event can set a starting point to enable them to draw up improvement plans to cut GHG emissions.
Measuring the impact on the various stages of organising and holding an event using the carbon footprint therefore makes it possible to identify potential areas for improvement and quantify the cuts to emissions prevented as a result. The design, planning, organisation and development of more sustainable events therefore has many advantages and benefits.
Based on this, and with the aim of promoting sustainable events in Andalusia, the Andalusian Climate Change Office (OACC) has commissioned the development of a "protocol to calculate the carbon footprint of events". Better calculating the carbon footprint of such events is a good idea and the protocol would complement the work carried out by organisations to calculate and register carbon footprints via the Andalusian Emission Compensation System (SACE).
