This project ensures that results are achieved across the whole of Denmark by sharing knowledge and best practices

20 pilot municipalities are already on board the DK2020 initiative, preparing ambitious local plans to pave the way for net-zero emissions in municipalities as geographical areas by 2050. The pilot project has adapted the international C40 standards to the Danish setting, and now the other municipalities are being invited to take part in the new joint initiative, "DK2020 – climate plans for the whole of Denmark".

Realdania established the DK2020 project in 2019, with 20 Danish municipalities undergoing a process that equips them to further develop and upgrade their existing climate work, modelling it on global best practice in the field, and ultimately to develop climate plans to achieve the 1.5 C Paris Agreement objective.

The municipalities' climate plans will, amongst other things, include guidance on how municipalities can become climate-neutral by 2050 and set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gases. In the meantime, the 20 municipalities have received technical assistance from and exchanged ideas with global and Danish experts from C40 and the green think tank CONCITO, to ensure that their plans meet the C40 climate planning standards.

The first municipalities to sign up for DK2020 were Albertslund, Allerød, Assens, Fredericia, Frederikshavn, Helsingør, Høje-Taastrup, Jammerbugt, Køge, Lejre, Lemvig, Lolland, Middelfart, Randers, Roskilde, Samsø, Sønderborg, Vejle and Aarhus.
