This project improves the planning of sustainable forest management and contributes to the bioeconomy and the fight against climate change by facilitating the use of a natural and sustainable resource, wood, while providing better protection to forests against fires.

The last decade has seen a revolution in forest monitoring, with remote sensors and data from major government space programmes.

In order to benefit from this opportunity, the main stakeholders in La Rioja's forestry sector have formed a partnership – the Forest LidaRioja Task Force – which has addressed the following challenges:

  •  improving sustainable forest management planning by preparing a regional forest inventory of eight forest species that account for more than 80% of La Rioja's forests: four broadleaf (Pyrenean oak, beech, holm oak and poplar) and four coniferous (Douglas-firs, Scots pine, black pine and Aleppo pine);
  • improving the prevention and suppression of forest fires by developing a risk map;
  • improving the supply of the main regional forest industry, through a better understanding of the development of La Rioja's productive poplar groves, and
  • transferring knowledge to the forestry sector by means of training days, and facilitating the use of results through a simple online application, http://lidarrioja.agrestaweb.org/#!/map .

A video summarising the project and its results can be found at https://www.forest-lidarioja.info .
