LIFEalps makes the important step from pilot projects to broader applications. In order to to guarantee the project's success, the basis of the project are three pilars: infrastructure, vehicles and services. This way, economy and sustainability work together.
"Zero Emission Services for a Decarbonised Alpine Economy" (in short: LIFEalps) promotes zero emission mobility without favouring any technology: in fact, infrastructure for battery and fuel cell electric vehicles will be installed (more than 60 charging stations and 5 hydrogen refuelling stations for cars and vehicles) in order to create a basic infrastructural network in South Tyrol and along the Brenner Corridor. In fact, one of the new HRS will be installed in Verona North making a decisive (infrastructural) step towards the South and towards reaching the Mediterranean the zero-emission way.
In order to to avoid the famous "the chicken or the egg" dilemma, the pilot fleet of different kinds of electric vehicles will also be deployed. The type of vehicle and the technology will depend on the demand, the availability on the market and the necessities. The first vehicles have already arrived in South Tyrol, and are destined to be joined by about another 40 by the end of the project in 2026.
Both, infrastructure and vehicles will serve as basis for services, be it for local public transport or in the tourism sector. This way, both the local population and guests visiting South Tyrol can benefit from LIFEalps.
LIFEalps is financed through the LIFE programme of the European Commission and is co-financed locally through the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. It has nine project partners with SASA being the project coordinator, and IIT the project manager.
