Waste reduction is not only a matter of management, but a matter of culture and awareness about the impact of waste in our environment. Second Life aims to educate citizens by introducing sustainable practices about the use and extension of the life-cycle of goods.
Circular economy is becoming more and more important in environmental practices as a key pillar for every action aiming at decreasing our carbon footprint.
The effort to implement a "reuse culture" is not only a good practice to enhance social cohesion and environmental good practices, but aims at achieving the EU goals regarding reduction in waste production. Sustainable development goals are part of the municipal's single programming document, and waste management plays an important role in achieving goals related to the reduction of sustainable consumption.
'Second Life' is the municipal reuse area which has the aim to reduce waste production by enhancing the extension of the life-cycle of products. Citizens, schools and associations, non-profit organisations can exchange any object free of charge. The motto is "If you don't need it anymore, maybe other people do. If you need it, maybe you do not have to buy it."
The area is active since 2016 and its activities are constantly increasing: more than 90 000 objects (around 70 tonnes) are exchanged every year and taken out from the waste cycle. The reuse area is also very active in engaging citizens and schools, providing educational activities focusing on circular economy, life-cycle assessment and environmental education on the theme of waste reduction.
Our main goal is to extend this practice to other areas of the city, implementing the activities done as well as stressing the importance of the extension of the life-cycle of goods as a pillar to a more sustainable environment.
